His curious mind and passion for finding solutions to world problems led him to build and lead the Brighton Collaboration Foundation. Its global independent research network has now become part of the Task Force for Global Health. As a vaccine safety specialist he was catapulted into the limelight when Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Pneumococcal, MMR-V and H1N1-Influenza vaccines became the focus of global attention. Working closely with the World Health Organisation he travelled the world, giving keynote speeches and contributing to over 100 scientific papers. He had scaled the pinnacle of the mountain called professional success.
And then his life changed.
A series of personal challenges helped Dr Bonhoeffer realise that he was not, in fact, superhuman. A true scientist, accustomed to using his own life experience as an experiment, he became curious about the dysfunctional environment he was working within. He was one of the first to sound the alarm about the state of physicians’ health and the startling rate of suicide, burnout and divorce within the global medical community. He was a pioneer in calling for a model of healthcare that sees the patient before the disease.
Founding non-profit Heart Based Medicine started as a one-man initiative in 2018. With the support of his coach Arjuna Ardagh and a hand-picked team, it flourished into a movement, a summit, a book and a forum for professional development. Jan’s vision is that the organization will serve as a beacon of hope and a benchmark of practices for aspiring healthcare professionals who dare to care, weaving the most compelling strands of science with the wisdom of their hearts to create a new paradigm of healing.
